CHAPTER 23

Today be me first day at school, this be where all the young go to get education and me tummy jig with fear. The school house is far from High Ostium. Me draw apart the curtains but little light fills the room and me squint me eyes trying to imagine me can see it from here, but there is only trees. Miss Dinah will drive me there in her own buggy, this be me opportunity to speak with her in private and state a clear case for me brethren.

‘Hey! First day at school, huh? Don’t be nervous, it’s gonna be fine.’ Kitty enter and sit herself down upon my bed and draw her knees up to her chest.

I walk across the room to seat myself at my bureau swallowing my sigh so she cannot hear. Me need to make some distance. Me cannot establish what Kitty want. Me feel a tightness growing against me chest.

‘Look, Obah. You might learn things at school that we haven’t talked about yet… Our family… well, we have a history that I’m not proud of. In fact, I’m ashamed of it. And… I’m sorry. Sorry that it happened.’ Kitty’s eyes is earnest. She lower both her legs to the ground and stand, her mouth opening to speak again.

‘We all are.’ Miss Dinah be at the door now and Kitty, sheepish, lower her head. ‘Everyone should be sorry about the past. We should never have treated people so unfairly. But some of us are doing our best, these days, to put things right. Now, Obah, are you ready? Come on,’ say Miss Dinah looking at Kitty and not me, ‘we don’t want to be late on the first day!’
